Executive Officer (part-time 5-6 days per fortnight – negotiable)

The Renal Society of Australasia (RSA) is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated person to become our first independent Executive Officer. The successful applicant will need to have the capacity to drive the RSA strategic plan which is set by the board.  They should enjoy developing and maintaining relationships with key people in the health industry including generation of income through good sponsor relationship management and they will need to have very strong administrations/computer skills. The successful applicant will also need to demonstrate skills to show that they can work independently and on-line, manage projects and be flexible when workloads change.

The key responsibilities and duties are outlined in the attached JDF.  Experience in health especially in renal nursing/allied health or in a similar role as an EO would be an advantage. The RSA board are open to either employing a contractor or direct employment arrangements. 

The RSA is a not for profit organisation whose core business is to provide educational and professional support to over 2000 members (and growing) across both Australia and New Zealand. The RSA is governed by an elected board of renal health professionals and also works with a company Association Professionals who provide contracted support for many aspects of the day to day society functions.  More detail about the RSA can be found at https://www.renalsociety.org

About the Renal Society of Australasia (RSA)

The RSA is a not-for-profit professional association representing nurses and allied health professionals involved in the care of people with kidney disease. It seeks to enhance health outcomes by:
• Providing professional development for renal nurses, related allied health professionals and other relevant parties
• Communicating knowledge and information about renal disease and associated treatments
• Advocating for the interests of nurses, health professionals and patients
• Supporting practice development, research, quality improvement and innovation
• Setting standards for nurses and health professionals caring for people with kidney disease.
With a membership across Australia and New Zealand of 2,100, the RSA is currently undergoing a period of professional growth with the aim of increasing the RSA position as a ‘go to professional organisation’ related to all areas of nephrology nursing.
The appointment of an independent contracted Executive Officer is central to its goal of achieving significant strategic growth in the short to medium term.


About the position

This diverse opportunity is ideal for an experienced and motivated person seeking to enhance the programme delivery and the professional strategic direction of the RSA. While requiring the capacity and capability to understand all aspects of the RSA operations, the incumbent will concentrate on business development, the strategic plan, sponsor relationships and policy development. To enable this work to progress, the incumbent will need a broad range of capabilities and knowledge, exceptional written and verbal communication skills, and well developed project management experience. An understanding of the field of renal nursing is an advantage.
This position is ideal for an enthusiastic, outcome-driven forward thinker who thrives on working both autonomously but with close communication with the RSA board and the RSA Office presently managed by “Association Professionals (AP)”.


Key duties

• Maintain and source new relationships with key stakeholders, sponsors and groups in the government, university, corporate and not-for-profit sectors
• Source and manage sponsorship income and education/research grants that maximise RSA income, both using effective systems that include development of annual sponsorship prospectus, and administering related contracts/registers/reports.
• Management of contract for RSAJ and editor support
• Close liaison with RSA office in relation to organising sponsored education events
• Work at a strategic level with directors and/or committee chairs to assist with the development of strategic documents and strategic relationships.
• Develop and manage annual engagement and communication plan for members which include enhancing social media engagement.
• Facilitation of bi-monthly communique/member newsletter
• Develop a plan for and facilitate the annual workshop series with key stakeholders
• Manage projects that develop strategies and deliver outcomes related to professional documentation as prioritised by the board, including position statements, standards of practice, strategic plan, annual report and credentialing
• Support board and executive meetings as required including governance, research, policy and by submitting relevant EO reports
• Coordinate/support SIGs functions including terms of reference and group administration and register of representatives/MOU’s
• Coordinate/support RSA representatives for affiliated organisations, including obtaining reports/articles for communique/board meetings, and liaising between the representative and the board.
• Update relevant parts of website in collaboration with RSA office
• Liaise with conference organisers to organise presidents reception at the conference
• Maintain operational relationship with RSA Office to ensure cohesion of RSA services
• Ongoing streamlining of RSA functions and review of EO role in partnership with board and RSA office


Key selection criteria

• An understanding of the health sector, clinical environments, and related policy and funding settings
• Proactive, outcome-focused approach and a commitment to ongoing professional and personal development
• Demonstrated ability to think critically and develop solutions to achieve RSA goals
• Project management experience, including scheduling, managing stakeholders and delivering outcomes within timeframes and budget
• Demonstrated capacity to manage multiple projects and day-to-day duties simultaneously, within agreed timelines and budgets
• Experience working closely with volunteers and committees to achieve outcomes
• Demonstrated experience in undertaking research and/or quality benchmarking exercises
• Excellent written communication skills across wide range of platforms including formal correspondence
• Excellent verbal communication skills; demonstrated ability to engage with health professionals, sponsors and government
• High level computer skills including MS Office, internet software and databases
• Ability to travel and occasionally work outside of usual hours.


Desirable selection criteria

• Experience accessing grants and sponsorship from a range of stakeholders
• Relevant professional qualification(s)
• Relevant experience with the not-for-profit sector
• An understanding of the utilisation of web media and websites


Employment conditions

This position is part-time, 0.5-0.6 EFT with flexible hours except for meeting support. From time to time work outside these hours is required to support RSA needs and deadlines. Time off in lieu can be negotiated in these instances.
This position will be managed either as an independent contractor or an employed position (by mutual agreement) reporting direct to the RSA board. This position will be based at residence of choice but the incumbent must have access to reliable internet and phone. It is anticipated there will be close links with the RSA ‘Office’ who contract these duties to Association Professionals.
The work plan and key performance indicators as well as reporting requirements will be set in consultation with the RSA board. The KPIs will be as set in the strategic plan where these are relevant to this position.
